Drag a file here, paste it, or choose one.

.heic, .heif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp, .avif, .gif, .bmp, .svg. Up to 50 MB.

PNG images, with or without transparency. Add up to 50.

Your images never leave your browser. They are decoded and redrawn here in the page.

Convert to

A favicon or Windows icon file, holding each size you pick below.

Icon sizes

16, 32 and 48 cover a website favicon. Add 256 for a Windows desktop icon. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the one .ico file.

More options

Remove location and camera data

Always on. Redrawing the image in the browser drops EXIF, GPS position and the camera model, so there is no way to keep them here. A photo's rotation is applied to the pixels first, so it stays the right way up.

Worked example

Measured on our own 386 by 512 transparent logo PNG, packed as an ICO at 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels.

PNG

143 KB

ICO, 4 sizes

55 KB

The logo is taller than wide, so each size is centred on a transparent square. Most of the 55 KB is the 256 pixel entry; a favicon with only 16, 32 and 48 is far smaller.

1. Add your PNG files. 2. Check ICO is picked. 3. Convert in the browser. 4. Download.

Questions

Asked and answered

No. Each size is drawn on a canvas in this tab and packed into the ICO file on your own machine.

16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts, and that is the default here. Add 256 if the same file will be a desktop or app icon.

It is scaled to fit inside the square and centred, with transparent space on the short sides. Nothing is cropped or stretched.

Save it as favicon.ico in the root of your site, so it loads at yoursite.com/favicon.ico, and browsers find it on their own. You can also point to it with a link tag in the page head: rel="icon" and href="/favicon.ico".

Each size is stored as PNG inside the ICO. Windows Vista and later, macOS and every current browser read that. Windows XP needs older bitmap style icons, which this tool does not write.
