The Interlace editor is built around a chat. You say what should change, and it changes the video. When a request is about one thing on screen, you point at it first with Select, so there is no guessing what "this" means. For hands-on changes, the Scene tab has the picture, the narration and the voice of each scene, and the Video tab has the drawing and the music for all of them.

Before you start, you need a finished video. If you do not have one yet, make your first video. Our example is a two-scene safety video, "Hazard communication policy".

  1. Step 1

    Start in the chat

The left column has three tabs at the top: Chat, Scene and Video. The editor opens on Chat, with a few suggestions above the box. Click a suggestion or type your own request in Ask for a change… and press Enter. Press / from anywhere in the editor to jump to the box.

  2. Step 2

    Turn on Select

To talk about one part of the picture, click Select under the canvas or press V. Its tooltip says what it is for: Point at things for the chat.

  3. Step 3

Point at the part you mean

Click a part of the scene to pick it, or drag on the picture to mark a region. Each pick becomes a chip above the chat box, such as Scene 1 · Product name, and the box now asks What should change here? Pick more than one if the request is about several parts. The × on a chip removes it.

  4. Step 4

    Say what should change

Type the request and press Enter. We asked "Make this fade in" about Product name. The reply says what it did, here Applied Fade., and shows the change it made. Requests work the same for the whole video: "Warmer voice", "Make scene 2 shorter" or "Translate to French".

  5. Step 5

    Undo anything

Every change can be taken back. Undo this request under a reply reverses that request. Undo and Redo at the top of the editor step back and forward through all your edits (⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z).

  6. Step 6

Open the Scene tab for the picture

Click Scene at the top of the left column, press P, or double-click the frame to see the settings of the scene on screen. The arrows at the top move between scenes. Under the picture, Redraw draws it again, Edit changes it from a short instruction, and Replace swaps in an image of your own.

  7. Step 7

    Change the narration

Click the narration text to edit it. The word count and length update as you type. Press Save to keep the new words, or Cancel. The play button under the text plays the recording, and Re-record records the narration again.

    Pick another voice

Click the voice name under the narration to open the voice list. Type in Search voices… to find one by name, then click the voice you want.

  9. Step 9

Set the drawing for every scene

Click Video at the top of the left column for what every scene shares: the style, the language, the drawing and the music. The last row of the Scene tab, Drawing and music apply to every scene, opens it too.

Drawing sets how every Sketch animation draws. Colour fills picks how the colour goes in: Brush, Scribble or Fade in. Pace sets how long each drawing takes: Quick, Steady or Slow. Under Effects, Add or Remove a Hand, a Pencil guide (faint pencil lines first, then ink) and Wobbly lines. Once the hand is on, click it to pick another from pictures: Real, Flat, Outline or Sketched, holding a Marker, Chalk, Pencil or Crayon, plus the skin tone and the size. Point at any option to preview it on the canvas before you click.

  10. Step 10

    Add background music

Under Music in the Video tab, Background music opens a window of the same name. Press Preview on any track in the Free library to hear it and Use to add it, or Upload your own track. The music loops to fit the video and gets quieter on its own while the narrator speaks.
