Your images never leave your browser. They are decoded and redrawn here in the page.

85 to 90 looks the same as the original to most eyes. Lower makes smaller files.

Always on. Redrawing the image in the browser drops EXIF, GPS position and the camera model, so there is no way to keep them here. A photo's rotation is applied to the pixels first, so it stays the right way up.

The JPG came out larger than the HEIC. That is normal: HEIC compresses with HEVC, which needs fewer bytes than JPEG for the same picture. You pay a little size for a file that opens anywhere.

1. Add your HEIC files. 2. Check JPG is picked. 3. Convert in the browser. 4. Download.

Questions

Asked and answered

No. The page reads each HEIC file, decodes it with libheif compiled to WebAssembly, and writes the JPG, all inside this tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards everything.

An iPhone set to High Efficiency saves photos as HEIC, compressed with HEVC. Windows only opens them once the HEIF and HEVC extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store, and many websites and older apps never read them at all. A JPG opens everywhere.

A little, as with any JPG. At the default quality of 90 the difference is hard to see. The JPG is usually larger than the HEIC, because HEVC compresses better than JPEG does. The worked example on this page shows the sizes from one of our own images.

Yes. The photo is redrawn on a canvas before it is saved, which drops the GPS position, the camera model and the rest of the EXIF data. The orientation is applied to the pixels first, so the JPG stays the right way up.

A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a separate video; this converts the still. A HEIC holding several images gives you the main one. iPhone HDR detail is flattened to a standard 8 bit JPG.

Settings, then Camera, then Formats, then Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG from then on. Photos you already took stay HEIC, which is what this converter is for.
