Worked example

Measured on our own 17 second voice recording saved as M4A, saved as MP3 at 128 kbps.

MP3, 128 kbps

263 KB

The MP3 is about twice the size of the M4A. AAC gets by on fewer bits than MP3 for the same speech, so matching the quality costs space. Pick 64 kbps to keep it the same size.

1. Add your file. 2. Pick the output. 3. Convert in the tab. 4. Listen and download.

Questions

Asked and answered

No. The file is read by the page and converted by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, on your own machine. There is no upload step, and closing the tab discards everything.

Both are compressed audio. M4A usually holds AAC, which is newer than MP3 and sounds better at the same bitrate, so an M4A is often the smaller file. MP3 plays on more old hardware. Converting one to the other compresses the sound a second time, so convert once, from the original.

Voice memos are saved as compact AAC, which handles speech well at a low bitrate. MP3 needs more bits to sound as good. In the worked example a 64 kbps mono memo became a 128 kbps MP3 about twice the size. Pick 64 kbps and Mono under More options to keep it small.

Songs bought from the iTunes Store since 2009 are DRM-free AAC and convert fine. Older protected files (.m4p) and Apple Music downloads are locked to Apple's apps and cannot be converted here or anywhere else.

Usually. Some are Apple Lossless (ALAC), which keeps every sample. The tool decodes both. From an Apple Lossless file, 320 kbps MP3 keeps the most, or pick FLAC to stay lossless.
