How to Change What Each Part of a Scene Reveals With Layout Mode
See every part of a scene as a box, reshape what each one reveals, then save the layout or reset it.
- You need
- A finished video in Interlace
- Time
- 3 minutes
- You end with
- Every part of the scene appears the way you want
Interlace draws each scene in parts: the title, each label, the drawing. Every part appears on screen as the narrator reaches it. Layout mode shows those parts as boxes on the frame, so you can see exactly what each one reveals and fix a box that cuts a word in half or misses an arrow.
Before you start, you need a finished video. If you do not have one yet, make your first video. Our example is scene 1 of a safety video, "Hazard communication policy".
Step 1
Switch to Layout
Under the canvas, the tool bar has Select, Layout and Overlay. Click Layout or press L.

Step 2
See every part of the scene
Each part of the scene now has a dashed box on the frame, and the panel on the left lists them under Layout elements. The Chat, Scene and Video tabs above it stay greyed out until you leave Layout mode. A T marks text; a diamond marks a drawing. The bar above the canvas reminds you what to do: Drag a box to change what it reveals, a point to reshape it.

Step 3
Select a box
Click a box on the frame, or its name in the list. The selected box shows its name and a point at each corner. Here we picked Product name.

Step 4
Drag a point to reshape it
Drag a corner point to change the shape of the box. Whatever sits inside the box appears together when the narrator reaches it. We widened Product name so the arrow next to the words appears with them. Drag inside a box to move the whole box instead.

Step 5
Start over if you need to
Reset throws away your changes in this scene and puts the boxes back where Interlace first placed them.

Step 6
Save the layout
Press Save layout to keep your changes. To leave without saving, press Cancel or Esc. Then press Play scene under the scene strip to watch the new reveal.

On videos built from layers
Some videos are built from separate layers instead of one drawing. On those, Layout works like a design tool: drag a layer to move it, drag a corner to resize it, and double-click text to type new words. Press Done when you finish.
What to do next
- Change when each part appears. Layout sets what a part reveals; the timeline sets when.
- Put your logo on top. The Overlay tool is next to Layout. Add a logo or image overlay.
- Describe the change instead. Edit with the chat and Select when a box is not the right tool.
