Worked example

Measured on our own SRT for a 2 minute 17 second explainer, converted to WebVTT.

Source SRT, 33 cues

2,876 bytes

VTT, 33 cues

2,794 bytes

Every cue and time came across. The VTT is a little smaller because cue numbers are optional in WebVTT, so they are left out. Chrome's own video player loaded all 33 cues.

1. Add the subtitles. 2. Pick the format. 3. Download or copy.

Questions

Asked and answered

No. The file is read as text by this page, converted with plain JavaScript and offered back as a download. There is no server step.

Three things matter: a WEBVTT line at the top, a dot instead of a comma in every time (00:00:01.000), and no font tags. Cue numbers are optional in VTT, so they are left out and the times do the work.

Yes. VTT supports <i>, <b> and <u>, so those stay. Font colour tags and positioning codes like {\an8} have no VTT equivalent and are removed. Tick Strip formatting tags to remove everything.

If the gap grows steadily, the subtitles were timed for a different frame rate. Pick 23.976 to 25 fps, or the reverse, under More options. If they are off by the same amount all the way through, use Shift instead.

Yes. It handles a byte order mark, Windows line endings, missing blank lines between cues, times without hours and one or two digit milliseconds. Cues with no readable time or text are skipped, and the result says how many.
