Source MP4

1.5 MB

WAV, 16 kHz mono

536 KB

The same 17 seconds as 44.1 kHz stereo WAV is 2.9 MB. Speech recognition does not need the extra, so 16 kHz mono is the smaller and better input for a transcription tool.

1. Add your file. 2. Pick the output. 3. Convert in the tab. 4. Listen and download.

Questions

Asked and answered

No. The file is read by the page and converted by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, on your own machine. There is no upload step, and closing the tab discards everything.

No. The MP4's sound was compressed when it was recorded, and WAV keeps exactly what is left. The point of WAV is that nothing more is lost: you can cut, edit and export it many times without another round of compression.

Most speech recognition runs at 16 kHz mono, so 16 bit, 16 kHz, mono WAV is the safe choice. It is also less than a fifth of the size of 44.1 kHz stereo. Pick 16 kHz and Mono under More options.

About 10 MB a minute at 44.1 kHz stereo, 11 MB at 48 kHz stereo, and 1.8 MB at 16 kHz mono. The size depends only on the length and those two settings, not on what is in the recording.

WAV is large, so this tool writes WAV files up to 60 minutes long. For a longer recording, split it into parts with the trim fields, or pick MP3 or M4A if it does not have to be uncompressed.
