Worked example
Measured on our own 6 second GIF at 480 by 270 and 12 frames a second, converted to MP4 at Balanced.
Source GIF
247 KB
MP4, H.264
20 KB
Same size, same frame rate, same 6 seconds, at about a twelfth of the bytes. H.264 only stores what changes between frames, and in an animation most of the frame stays still.
1. Add the GIF. 2. Pick the quality. 3. Convert locally. 4. Download the MP4.
What Interlace does
Your GIF has no sound. An Interlace video talks.
- Write one sentence or upload a document
- Interlace draws the scenes and narrates them
- Loop it in a slide or share it as an MP4
Real Interlace output, unedited. Shown silent and sped up.

Questions
Asked and answered
No. The file is opened by the page and converted by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, on your own machine. There is no upload step, and closing the tab discards everything.
The MP4 holds the animation once. Looping is up to the player: tick Loop until stopped in PowerPoint, add the loop attribute to an HTML video tag, or set the clip to repeat in your LMS. Most chat apps loop short videos on their own.
H.264 has no transparent pixels, so transparent areas get filled in. If the background matters, convert to animated WebP instead, which keeps it.
H.264 needs an even width and height. A GIF that is 481 pixels wide is scaled to 480. You will not see the difference.
No. A GIF has no audio track, so the MP4 is silent.
500 MB and 10 minutes. Everything runs inside one browser tab, which has a fixed memory budget, and the encoder runs on a single thread. A rewrap takes seconds; a full re-encode runs at about real time for 720p and several times the clip length for 1080p. For anything bigger, a desktop encoder such as HandBrake is the better tool.
