Result

Worked example

Measured on our own 26 second whiteboard explainer at 1280 by 720, cropped to the centred 9:16 box.

Source, 1280×720

4.2 MB

Cropped, 404×720

0.5 MB

A 9:16 box on a 16:9 frame keeps 404 of the 1280 columns, under a third of the picture. That is most of why the file shrank, and why the subject has to sit near the middle for the whole clip. Scrub through before you crop.

1. Drop in a video. 2. Draw the crop box. 3. Lock a shape if you need one. 4. Download the MP4.

What Interlace does

Nothing to crop when each scene is framed for its shape.

  • Pick 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 before the video is made
  • Each scene is laid out for that frame
  • Your logo, colours and fonts applied to every scene

Real Interlace output, unedited. Shown silent and sped up.

Questions

Asked and answered

No. The page reads the file, ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly crops it inside this tab, and the MP4 is written back to your machine. There is no upload step, and closing the tab discards everything.

Cropping cuts out a region and keeps its pixels at their original size, so a centred 9:16 box on a 1920 by 1080 clip gives you 606 by 1080. Resizing scales the whole picture to a target size such as 1080 by 1920. Crop to remove something at the edge, like a webcam overlay, a logo or black bars. Use the video resizer when a platform asks for exact dimensions.

Yes. Each corner handle has a touch area about the size of a fingertip, and dragging inside the box moves it. If a drag is too coarse on a small screen, type the numbers into the X, Y, width and height boxes instead.

H.264 video with standard 4:2:0 colour needs even dimensions, so an odd width or height is rounded down to the even number below it. The page shows the final numbers before you run the crop.

The sound is kept and re-encoded as AAC at 128 kbps. The picture has to be re-encoded, because a crop changes every frame, so it is written as H.264 at crf 23, which is hard to tell from the source at normal viewing size.

500 MB and 10 minutes. Everything runs inside one browser tab, and a tab has a fixed memory budget. Past those limits a desktop editor is the better tool.
