Worked example
Measured on our own 17 second WMV 8 training clip at 640 by 360, converted to MP4 at Balanced.
Source WMV
1.5 MB
MP4, H.264 and AAC
384 KB
Both streams were re-encoded in under 9 seconds. The picture stays 640 by 360, the size it was made at, and the MP4 now plays on a Mac, a phone and in an LMS.
1. Add the WMV. 2. Pick the quality. 3. Convert locally. 4. Download the MP4.

Questions
Asked and answered
No. The file is opened by the page and converted by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, on your own machine. There is no upload step, and closing the tab discards everything.
The video inside is Windows Media Video 7, 8 or 9 and the audio is Windows Media Audio. No MP4 player reads those, so there is nothing to copy across. The page re-encodes both, which takes roughly as long as the video plays.
Some WMV files from online stores and e-learning platforms are locked with Windows Media DRM. Nothing but the licensed player can decode those, and this page will not try. Files you made yourself in Movie Maker or exported from PowerPoint are not locked.
No. Conversion cannot add detail that was never recorded, and the page never scales a video up. It will look the same as it did in Windows Media Player, in a format everything plays.
Yes. Open More options and type a trim start and end, in seconds or minutes and seconds.
500 MB and 10 minutes. Everything runs inside one browser tab, which has a fixed memory budget, and the encoder runs on a single thread. A rewrap takes seconds; a full re-encode runs at about real time for 720p and several times the clip length for 1080p. For anything bigger, a desktop encoder such as HandBrake is the better tool.
