Result

Worked example

Measured on our own 14 second H.263 3GP at 352 by 288, made like a camera phone clip, converted to MP4 at Balanced.

Source 3GP

285 KB

MP4, H.264 and AAC

93 KB

The picture stays 352 by 288 at 15 frames a second, as it was recorded. H.264 needed a third of the space H.263 did, and the MP4 plays on any current phone.

1. Add the 3GP. 2. Keep the defaults. 3. Convert locally. 4. Download the MP4.

Questions

Asked and answered

No. The file is opened by the page and converted by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, on your own machine. There is no upload step, and closing the tab discards everything.

It will look the same, just playable. Phones of that era recorded at 176 by 144 or 352 by 288 pixels, and no conversion can add detail that was never captured. The page keeps the original size rather than blowing it up.

AMR is a speech codec built for phone networks, and many players skip it, which is why old clips often play silent. ffmpeg decodes it and the MP4 gets AAC, so the sound comes back.

One at a time for now. Each one is quick, because the files are small: drop the next clip onto the card and convert again.

3G2 is the CDMA phone version of the same format. Rename it to .3gp and it converts the same way.

500 MB and 10 minutes. Everything runs inside one browser tab, which has a fixed memory budget, and the encoder runs on a single thread. A rewrap takes seconds; a full re-encode runs at about real time for 720p and several times the clip length for 1080p. For anything bigger, a desktop encoder such as HandBrake is the better tool.
